Cafe World medals keep virtual chefs in the kitchen

New Facebook games seem to pop up almost daily, which makes it more crucial than ever for older games to constantly innovate by adding new items and game mechanics. Cafe World (the third most popular game on Facbook) usage has declined slightly toward the end of December. As an avid player of the game it's understandable -- there's only so many times you can prep a dish, wait for it to cook, then serve patrons, clean up, and so forth until the game turns into more of a grind.

So, we were happy to discover that Cafe World finally launched its achievement system, currently made up of five classes with four medals per class -- bronze, silver, gold and royal. The achievements are based on number of neighbors, customers served, dishes cooked, coins collected and how many consecutive days players have logged into the game. While these achievements aren't exactly creative, and more experienced players will already have a few medals on the first day, they seem to offer some much-needed motivation to play Cafe World than we have in the past few weeks.

Zynga founder Mark Pincus schools Charlie Rose on social gaming

mark pincus schools charlie rose on social gamingIn case you missed it, Zynga founder Mark Pincus appeared on the TV show Charlie Rose on December 29 and schooled the PBS host on social games.

The subdued interview offers more of an overview of the emerging social game space, and we were slightly disappointed that there was ne're a mention of the whole 'ScamVille' controversy that erupted in Fall 2009. Then again, that might be an indication that -- while millions of people play these games -- social gaming is still just a blip on the mainstream public's radar.

The most pointed question in the interview is when Rose asks Pincus if "he's in it for the money" and the Zynga CEO responds in earnest that he wants to create a company that he'll be with for "the next 20 years."

"I am interested in creating what Bing Gordon [former Electronic Arts CEO] calls an Internet treasure, and I think that will be remembered in this point in history for great consumer branded Internet services that were created that enhanced people's lives, like Amazon, like Google, like Facebook."

There's not a lot of new information in the rest of the interview, though the brief segment's worth watching just to see "Charlie's Cafe" -- a mock-up of a Cafe World restaurant made specifically for the host -- and to hear Rose pronounce Zynga like "Zin-ga" (as in Zinfandel). Looks like the video clip has been posted on the official Charlie Rose YouTube channel yet, but we'll place it here as soon as it arrives.

Restaurant City Tips and Cheats - Getting Started Guide

Iron Chef, move aside - there's a new headliner in town. Facebook game Restaurant City lets you create and run the restaurant of your dreams by hiring friends, decorating and creating a unique menu. Here's a quick guide to get you started on your way to running a five-star joint!

Create your menu.

Like any top-notch eatery, the most important part of your restaurant is the food. Food is divided up into four categories: Starters, Main, Desserts and Drinks (unlocked at level 15), and you'll be able to eventually serve up to three different dishes for each course. Each dish you can create in Restaurant City is composed of three or four different ingredients -- you'll need a set of those ingredients every time you want to level up the dish (up to level 10). The higher level your dishes are, the higher your restaurant rating will reach.

Gather ingredients.

Ingredients can be obtained in multiple ways. Every day, three random ingredients will be available for purchase with Coins from the Market. You can earn a random ingredient by correctly answering the Food Quiz every day (found in your mailbox). You can also plant seeds to grow herb ingredients like Oregano, Bayleaf and Basil in the garden. In addition, you'll receive one free ingredient the first time you visit a friend's restaurant. If you're desperate to create or level up a particular dish, you can purchase individual ingredients using Playfish cash.
Fresh ingredients market

Trade with friends.

Since most of the ingredients you receive in the game are randomly selected (with the exception of purchasing them individually with Playfish cash), it's good to know that you can look to your friends to find that last piece of your dish. When you visit a friend's restaurant, you'll be able to see which ingredients they currently have and make an offer to swap with one of yours. Your friend can approve or reject the trade request when they log in (chances are they'll approve unless they're also working on dishes that require that particular ingredient).

Hire your friends to work!

You'll be able to hire more friends as either chefs, waiters or janitors as you level up, and unlike with trading ingredients, your friends don't need to be playing Restaurant City in order for them to work at your joint. However, since their happiness decreases over time, you will need to tell them to rest every once in a while (free, but you'll be temporarily short a worker) or give them food (which costs money) so that they'll continue to work.

Design your restaurant.

Restaurant City will start you off with a few tables and chairs when you first open your place, but after that, it's up to you to add more seating/serving areas, as well as stoves for chefs to prepare food at. As your restaurant's rating goes up and more customers come in, you'll probably need to optimize the arrangement of tables and chairs around a stove in order to maximize your employees' efficiency. Usually the best way to do this is to create 'islands' -- groupings where one or two stoves can provide food to six or seven tables, with one waiter 'stranded' in the center to serve the customers.

As you earn more expendable cash, you'll also be able to customize both the interior and exterior of your restaurant with new flooring, wallpaper, decorations and more.

Cafe World adds Mystery Crates

Fans of Mafia Wars are used to Mystery Crates, a grab bag of sorts purchased (mostly) with real money that gives players a chance to score rare items. While the practice is good for players seeking the rarest loot in the game, Zynga's teams haven't been open about how many Mystery Crates are purchased.

Given that Mystery Crates showed up in Zynga's Café World game on Facebook over the weekend, one might assume that the purchasable crates do make good money for the social gaming company. Granted, the rules have changed for Café World. Unlike the the Mafia Wars model where players can buy multiple crates at a reduced rate, Cafe World Players can only buy a single crate for 10 Café World Cash.

Of course, given that the free way of gaining Café Cash seems to be permanently locked at 5 (10 is needed to buy a Crate), opening a Mystery Case requires a real world money purchase of $4.99 or greater.

Sneak Peek: Cafe World's Thanksgiving Menu Items

With three hours remaining in the Cafe World's Super Slider event, fans were already wondering about the Thanksgiving menu items that Games.com confirmed were coming soon after the event. Last night, the team behind the Facebook social networking game gave fans a glimpse of two items: a turkey and a cornucopia.

No other details were given about when the two items (or additional menu items) may show up. Historically, new Cafe World items do tend to show up on Thursday so players may see them later on today today.

Sneak Peek at New Cafe World Decor

Once the Super Sliders event in Cafe World finishes by tomorrow, cafe owners will get four new decoration options for their joints. While the four new options seem to lack an all-enveloping theme, covering nature-themes with a volcano or a waterfall; classic restaurant ambiance with rustic fireplace and ending with Chinese-themed dragon column, there something for nearly everyone.

One Billion Super Sliders Served in Cafe World

In the world of burgers, there's only one measure of success. One billion. Today Cafe World chefs have cooked over one billion Super Sliders. The new menu option is part of a special event where players get to serve burgers that take 5 minutes to cook and never spoil. But Super Sliders, a reward for the one millionth fan of the Cafe World page on Facebook, is only available for 48 hours.

Unlike the first billion burger maker, McDonald's, Cafe World got to that sacred number in about 16 hours. With just under 30 hours remaining in the Super Sliders event, it's time to serve a few billion more.

Cafe World Serving Super Sliders Today

ReTired of cooking stacks of Bacon Cheeseburgers in Cafe World? Well at noon PST today, Facebook players will gain the new Super Sliders menu item. So what's so good about them? Like the Bacon Cheeseburgers, Super Sliders still cost only 14 Coins to purchase and take only five minutes to prepare. Yet the big difference is that each order creates 25 servings, 12 more than Bacon Cheeseburgers. So while patrons will still pay four Coins per serving, chefs will earn 100 Coins total for all those servings (versus 52 for Bacon Cheeseburgers).

We too are curious about why the new burgers have golden dollar signs on them. Regardless, Happy Super Slider Day!

Can Vegan Chefs Survive in Cafe World?

Living a vegetarian lifestyle takes a firm commitment in not only changing the food that one consumes but also the choices one makes in their daily life. Making such choices in real-life is one thing but what about living up to the vegetarian ideal in a Facebook foodie game like Cafe World?

Early on in the game, there are some good clear choices for vegetarians with Super Chunk Fruit Salad, Triple Berry Cheesecake and French Onion Soup (we'll assume the soup is vegan since beef broth is not an ingredient in the in-game recipe) and level 3 offers up Caramel Apples, Chips and Guacamole and Pumpkin Pie. The next vegetarian plate doesn't arrive until level 15 with Tony's Classic Pizza. Level 45 adds Overstuffed Peppers (which appear to be rice and not beef-filled) and the final dish, Powdered French Toast, arrives at level 43.

Yet there's a problem. All the vegetarian items take up to 12 hours to complete with the non-vegetarian dish Homestyle Pot Roast take two days to cook and offers up the most XP and coins in the game. So living up to the vegan ideal is also hard in Cafe World as players would have to return every 12 hours to serve Pumpkin Pie or Triple Berry Cheesecake. Can it be done? Yes but leveling up and maintaining your view will prove to be yet another test of wills.

Cafe's World Vegetarian Friendly Items (food/cooking time)
Super Chunk Fruit Salad -- 15 minutes
French Onion Soup -- 4 hours
Triple Berry Cheesecake -- 12 hours
Chips and Guacamole -- 3 minutes
Caramel Apples -- 2 hours
Pumpkin Pie -- 12 hours
Tony's Classic Pizza -- 5 hours
Overstuffed Peppers -- 12 hours
Powered French Toast -- 20 minutes

Which Thanksgiving Food for Cafe World?

[Update: Zynga confirmed with Games.com that Thanksgiving menu items will be coming to Cafe World]

For Americans, Thanksgiving Day (November 26) is a time to meet with friends and family to catch up on old times over food, drink and football. With Cafe World's makers being based in the U.S., players can expect new menu offerings to reflect some of the tastes of the season. What food would you like to see?
