5. Shao Khan, Mortal Kombat
"I am Shao Kahn! Konqueror of worlds! You will taste no victory!"
Shao Kahn, Emperor of the Outworld, makes his first appearance in the Mortal Kombat series in 1993 as the final boss in Mortal Kombat II. His godlike strength, and innate difficulty to beat, has made him one of the most iconic fighting-game bosses ever. If you can beat him on Expert Difficulty, you should probably consider entering pro tournaments. The fact that he can almost one shot you is pretty scary.
If that wasn't enough he's married to a screaming half-dead witch bride and has a daughter with razor sharp teeth. The lesson here is don't play with black magic.
4. Dr. Eggman, Sonic the Hedgehog
"Citizens of Earth, lend me your ears and listen to me very carefully! My name is Dr. Eggman- the world's greatest scientist, and soon to be the world's greatest ruler. Now witness the beginning of the greatest empire of all time!"
Dr. Ivo Robotnik, more commonly referred to as Dr. Eggman, is a mad scientist who dreams of world domination. He plans to conquer the world by building an animal-robot army. His plans of mass destruction and completion of the "Eggman Empire" are constantly foiled by Sonic and his friends. For a mad scientist with an IQ of 300, it's pretty sad that he gets outsmarted by a hedgehog and some small forest mammals. Although Eggman is without question one of the most comically lame villains ever, we'll never forget him.
3. Sephiroth, Final Fantasy VII
"Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away."
After discovering his true origins, Sephiroth goes from a celebrity war hero to one of the worlds most feared villains over night. He decides to rebel against his maker, the Shinra Electric Power Company (who performed multiple experiments on him and brainwashed him), and enacts a world-wide vendetta against the "corruption of humankind".
Not just the emo antagonist of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth is also a villain in its extended universes such as Kingdom Hearts 2 where the difficulty to defeat him supersedes that of the actual boss, Xemnas. Also, with a goose-bump inducing theme like One Winged Angel, how can anyone deny his infamy?
2. Giovanni, Pokemon Red & Blue
"Do you want to find out what 'or else' means?"
Giovanni is the mastermind behind Team Rocket in the anime, the leader of Viridian Gym in the game, and in the manga his main focus is to conquer Kanto by eliminating anyone who stands in his way. He is consumed by his thirst for power and all-in-all he's the most ruthless antagonist we've ever seen in the Pokemon universe.
Like, not even Gary Oak could defeat him and he had 10 badges.
1. Bowser, Super Mario Bros
Are you even in the least bit surprised? The Mario franchise would never have become what it is today if it wasn't for the massive success of Super Mario World 2 where Paulina was replaced by Princess Peach and Donkey Kong (who would later get his own game) was replaced by our favorite fire breathing reptilian, Bowser. As far as we're concerned he is the most iconic video game villain of all time!
