This generation of consoles seemed to totally ignore the potential of MMO games but the next-generation is finally doing it justice. Sony and Square Enix have confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be available as a console MMO on both the Playstation 3 and next-generation, Playstation 4. This is quite the gamble from Sony as the original release of Final Fantasy XIV was widely considered to be a total flop by both players and critics.
The original failed to deliver on practically every level and was flawed at the very core of the game. Since then Square Enix have promised to deliver the experience that fans deserve with the upcoming release of the redesigned, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The closed beta has been underway for a few months now but with a heavy NDA in effect, we're not really getting any confirmation on whether or not this revival is going to work.
One thing is certain, releasing on 3 popular platforms means there won't be any shortage of players for Square Enix's revival efforts but will it pay off? Only time will tell.
