TechCrunch reports that, according to Iger's response to an analyst during a conference call, that Disney is "likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console." The CEO soon after added as a caveat that Disney will look at Star Wars console games "opportunistically" through potential licensing deals to traditional game developers.
Frankly, the move makes sense. Disney hasn't been terribly successful in recent years with console games developed in-house, but social and mobile is another story. Between the runaway hit that is Where's My Water? to a social game that helped spark a sub genre on Facebook, Gardens of Time, Disney has had an impressive run.
Better yet, Disney already has a social game studio with experience in developing Facebook games surrounding major brands: Playdom. The developer played a major role in ensuring that Marvel: Avengers Alliance was a success, so why not give Star Wars a go? Let's hope an official Star Wars social game turns out like Escape from Kamino. (And what about that rumored Ewok game?). As far as social games are concerned, a Disney-era Star Wars is actually ... exciting.
