Zynga reports that 45,000 Farmville players have bought the limited edition Sweet Yam seeds in this new drive, which launched on May 4. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the virtual seed sales go to relief agency FATEM, to help educate the 30,000 refugees that have flooded into the town of Mirabealais. The other 50% of the proceeds obviously went to Zynga, which obviously knows the meaning of doing well by doing good.
This newest incarnation of the Sweet Seeds program, which runs through May 18, follows on an October 2009 charity drive which raised $427,000 and a January drive which raised almost a million dollars across multiple Zynga games.
