Just the name sounds crazy. How would Plants fare against brain nibbling undead types? Quite well actually. Playing on the plant side, you place peashooters, zombie eating plants and cherry bombs in strategic places to mince your formerly living foes. More weaponized flora and fauna is purchased with sunlight, which shows up from sunflowers and mushrooms you plant and at random times on sunny levels. Corny, yes. Addictive, yes, Should you try it? Definitely.

Boxhead is a classic shooting zombie game that you play from a bird's eye view. Sticking to simple controls, just use the arrow keys to point, space bar to shoot and use the Z or X buttons to choose a weapon. Starting off with a pistol is fun but as hordes of zombies, devils, runners, mummies and the batty Vampirettes gain on you, inventory like a shotgun, a minigun, grenades, rockets and turrets make your zombie killing tasks a bit easier (although the ammo is limited). In a worse case scenario, you can still call in an air strike to wipe the slate clean. Just make sure your spacebar is in good working condition, Boxhead will truly put your thumbs to the test.
Taking a page from classic horror movies, SAS Zombie Assault sticks the player in a bunker as leagues of zombies are out on a stroll with a taste for people munchies. Shooting zombies is just one part of this thriller as you'll also need to rebuild barriers to hold the undead back as well. Better weapons do give you more effective means to make zombies into dirt, but managing the rebuilding of barriers, weapons and ammo make for an entertaining challenge.
Zombies were people too and there's no better game to understand the undead perspective than Sonny 2. In it, you play as a Sonny and start with a partner as they fight prison guards, a warden and fellow zombies. Play is done with the mouse as you slash, hit or use projectiles to take down foes. Despite really simple fighting, the cut-scenes that build the storyline will keep you going for hours. But its so good... you too might ask, why is this free?
Like SAS: Zombie Assault, you're in charge of putting lead into the local zombie population and surviving 20 days. Here you'll try to take them out before they break down the barrier between you and them. Faster maniacal ones will make you jump into action as your best shots are parallel with the beast. Slower faster ones take more ammo to drop and provide shelter for faster ones. Interestingly, there are even zombie dogs here too. Once each level is complete, you're given 12 hours of sunlight to manage your time repairing the barrier, seeking survivors (who help shoot zombies) and search for better weapons (the Barrett weapon, the final of the 11 weapons, rips through three at a time). The Last Stand delivers mindless zombie fun, if you can survive.
Protecting yourself or your barriers is one thing but protecting your friends from zombies and you is another. Zombie Mayhem isn't the best looking game ever but it innovates by introducing a new kind of failure. You take your archer and shoot arrows at the zombies. Each zombie takes one arrow to drop. Shoot too many arrows and your friend gets it. You fail, William Tell.
